Does your business need a website or an app? How to decide

The question every entrepreneur asks

When a business decides to go digital, the first question is almost always the same: do I need a website or a mobile app? The answer, as with most things in tech, is: it depends.

But don't worry. In this article we'll break down the real differences between both options, the costs involved, and give you a clear framework to make the best decision for your business. No unnecessary jargon.

What is each one? (no complications)

A website is a site your customers access from any browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox — without installing anything. It can be as simple as a landing page with your contact info or as complex as an e-commerce platform with thousands of products.

A mobile application (app) is a program your users download and install on their phone from the App Store or Google Play. It lives on their home screen and can access phone features like the camera, GPS, push notifications, and more.

The fundamental difference is this: the web is for people to find you, the app is for people to use you daily.

When a website is enough

For the vast majority of businesses — restaurants, law firms, local shops, freelancers, agencies — a professional website is more than enough. Here's why:

1. Your customers search on Google, not the App Store. When someone needs a dentist, a lawyer, or a restaurant, the first thing they do is search Google. If you don't have a website, you simply don't exist for that potential customer.

2. It's cheaper to develop and maintain. A professional website can cost between a fraction and half of what it costs to develop an app. Plus, monthly maintenance is significantly lower.

3. It works on all devices without installation. Your website works on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. No one needs to download anything.

4. It updates instantly. Change a price, add a service, update your hours — and the changes are reflected immediately for all visitors. No waiting for Apple or Google approvals.

5. You can measure everything. With tools like Google Analytics you can know exactly how many people visit your site, where they come from, what pages they view, and how many contact you.

When you actually need an app

There are specific scenarios where a mobile app makes sense and adds real value that a website can't offer:

1. Your product requires frequent, daily use. If your users will interact with your platform multiple times a day — like a delivery app, a task management system, or a fitness app — a native app offers a much smoother experience.

2. You need device features. Camera for scanning documents, GPS for delivery tracking, push notifications for urgent alerts, offline access for areas without internet. This is app territory.

3. You're building a SaaS product. If your business model is offering a tech service by subscription — a CRM, an invoicing system, a collection platform — you'll probably need both a web version and a mobile app.

4. Your competition already has an app. In some markets, having an app isn't a luxury but a requirement to compete. If your customers expect an app, not having one is a disadvantage.

The middle ground: PWA (Progressive Web App)

There's a third option many businesses don't know about: Progressive Web Apps (PWA). They're websites that behave almost like an app. They can be installed on the phone's home screen, work offline, send push notifications, and feel like a native app.

PWAs are an excellent option for businesses that need more than a website but can't justify the cost of a native app. At Nexora we've built several PWAs for clients who needed that intermediate functionality without duplicating development costs.

Our honest advice

If you're starting out and have no digital presence, start with a professional website. It's the foundation of everything. Without a website, there's no SEO, no credibility, no way for people to find you.

Once you have a solid user base and understand how they interact with your business digitally, you can evaluate whether an app adds real value or is just an unnecessary expense.

The worst decision is to have nothing. The second worst is spending on an app nobody will download when a website would have been enough.
